The bottleneck was never the body. It isn't the brain, either.

Walk the floor at WAIC this month and you can hear a new consensus setting. For two years the story was that the bodies weren't ready. Now the bodies are everywhere, three hundred humanoids on a single show floor, dancing, folding, playing ping-pong, and the story has flipped. As the analyst Grace Shao put it after walking that same floor: the robot hardware is ready; the intelligence is not.

She's right. A robot that repeats a rehearsed routine is not the same as a robot that handles an ordinary, unrehearsed mess. Her co-author Rachel Zheng put it even better: the robots didn't make human-level dexterity feel imminent, they made human dexterity feel extraordinary. The hard part was never the servos.

The mind is being defined too small

When people say the intelligence isn't ready, they mean capability, the brain: can it generalize, can it improvise, can it fold a shirt it has never seen. That gap is real, and the whole field is racing to close it. But the brain is only half of a mind. The other half is continuity: memory, permissions, relationship. Whether the thing that worked in your kitchen yesterday is the same thing that wakes up in your kitchen tomorrow.

Right now, it isn't.

One brain per body

Every company in the race is building its own brain and welding it to its own body. Tesla's intelligence is bolted to Optimus. Europe's new humanoid unicorn ships its own stack inside its own robot. Each Chinese platform runs its own. So the moment the body changes, a new model, a better arm, a cheaper unit, the relationship resets. You don't get an upgrade. You get a stranger who happens to look familiar.

The market feels this even when it can't name it. Y Combinator's newest requests for startups asks, in plain language, for new operating systems for the physical world: software to route and manage the robots and agents around us. A billboard on Mission Street reworks the Creation of Adam so a robotic hand reaches for the words Physical AI. Everyone is circling the same missing layer. Almost no one is building it to move.

Continuity is the part that makes it yours

We build the other way around. The family buys a Cereal, and the robot is real: we deploy it, we support it, it earns its keep. But the permanent part is the mind. One intelligence that persists across bodies, permissioned, owned by the household, carried from body to body the way your phone carries your life from one handset to the next. The bodies will get cheaper and better every year. That is exactly why you should never have to teach one from scratch again.

The hardware is ready; agreed. The intelligence is hard; agreed. But a mind that forgets you the moment it changes bodies was never the answer to either. Capability makes a robot useful. Continuity makes it yours.

That's the part still missing. It's the part we're building.
