What phones teach us about robots

Personal computing made a decision early: the intelligence and the object are different products. Your phone is a body. Your accounts, memory, apps, preferences, and permissions are the mind, and the mind is the part you actually have a relationship with. Swap the handset and your life reappears on the new one in twenty minutes.

The split that built two empires

The phone industry split into layers and both layers won. Apple integrates the whole stack. Android runs on hundreds of bodies Google never manufactured, built by companies competing on hardware merit; Google does not stock phones in a warehouse to make Android matter. The OS defines the experience, carries the user's world, and every hardware maker that adopts it inherits a mature mind on day one.

Robotics has not made the split

Robotics is still pre-split. Every robot ships as an appliance: the intelligence is welded to the body, trained for the body, and retired with the body. That is why every new robot arrives in a home as a stranger, and why the race to build the best body misses where durable value accumulates. Bodies depreciate. Minds appreciate, because a mind compounds everything it learns about a home, its routines, and its permissions.

Printers and drivers

There is an older version of the same lesson. When you replace a printer, you do not rewrite your documents; the driver layer absorbs the change of body, and everything you created survives. The embodiment contract is that layer for robots: each body publishes what it can safely do, and the same mind, memory, and audit trail load onto whichever body serves the task. One mind, any body.
