Everyday Robots was working. It just never shipped.

In January 2023, Google shut down Everyday Robots, its moonshot for helper robots in human environments. The standard telling files it under failed robot projects. The standard telling is wrong in the way that matters most: the robots were working.

Pulled back, then shut down

Google pulled Everyday Robots back from market to research, then shut it down before it ever shipped to the world. Inside Alphabet it was already doing real work: a fleet of one-armed robots moved through offices, cleaned cafeteria tables, sorted waste and recycling, and improved from data gathered across the whole fleet. People who worked in those buildings stopped noticing the robots, which is the highest compliment ambient technology ever gets.

What actually ended it

What ended the program was not capability. It was economics and timing inside a company reorganizing its bets: custom hardware is expensive, and a research fleet with no product to ship is among the first things a downturn cuts. The industry concluded that robots in human environments are too early. We concluded something different: the intelligence should never have been welded to one body and one balance sheet, because when the body program dies, everything the mind learned dies with it.

Finishing the job

Cereal's founding team helped build Everyday Robots and the simulation systems behind it, and is regrouping at Cereal to finish the job. The thesis answers the way the program ended: build the mind as its own durable layer, portable across bodies, so that no single piece of hardware, and no single budget cycle, can take the intelligence down with it. The granted patents our founders carry, in simulation-guided robot control and secure device attestation, are load-bearing pieces of that answer.

Everyday Robots proved that robots can be useful in human space. Cereal exists to make that usefulness persistent. Jarvis needs a body; the mind is ours to keep.
